TRANSGENIC
Mark Leibert
August 27, 2004 at Gallery
eleven50 from 7-9pm.
Genetic seed images
and paintings governed by the laws of Japanese gardening are on view
at Gallery Eleven50. Presenting TRANSGENIC, paintings and works on paper
by Mark Leibert. Works in a variety of mediums from acrylic, oil, watercolor,
to gouache are on display. Leibert’s images of seeds and plant
forms are given a twist in this body of work. Silhouettes of plants
from the artist’s garden and environment are photographed and
cut out digitally and then transferred in pigment to panel and canvas.
These hard-edged shapes echo the “vector art” seen in IPOD
commercials and Flash art. When placed on the subtle and juicy washes
of pigment, the results are tenuous. The effect is anywhere from pastoral
scenes to Man Ray’s “rayographs”. A range of colors
that are guaranteed to delight draw the viewer into the image. Closer
inspection reveals unexpected interludes of color in layers of pigment.
A delicate balance of the natural and unnatural reinforce the impression
of mad science on the verge.
